JUNE 2013 – For the MCA’s Annual Golf Outing at North Hill Country Club, NY, PAR nominated the charity organization Sunrise Day Camp, which was selected as one of two recipients of charitable donations.
Sunrise Day Camp, submitted by Larry Levine, is the first dedicated day camp for children with cancer and their siblings where camp and all-year round programs are provided completely free of charge. Sunrise is affiliated with 13 pediatric oncology hospitals in the New York metropolitan area and focuses on helping children develop their social skills, giving them the confidence to play with other children and providing them with a normative summertime experience- something that is often denied them due to their illness and treatments. By welcoming siblings to camp together with sick children, the camp gives parents some respite, while enabling the children to connect with one another on the basis of fun and friendship, and not through the illness. Sunrise has served over 1,500 children at its flagship camp in Long Island, has recently opened a satellite camp in Israel, and is currently building a third camp in Rockland County.
